In the Absence of an Ealdorman is a quest under Lincolnscire in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
Your task is to rescue Hunwald’s father who seems to have been taken away.

To begin the quest, head to the hospice first. The exact location is shown in the map below, marked by the quest symbol.
Search the hospice
To access the hospice, go through the rooftop. You’ll see some workers that you can talk to.
The one you’re looking for is inside the hospice itself. She’s the head healer.
Explore the bathhouse
Next, head to the bathhouse. The location is shown in the map below, marked by the quest symbol.
There are a few guards inside. Take them out and look for the path downwards.
Destroy the weak wooden planks.
You will find yourself in the sewer.
Discover where the sewers lead
Keep following the path until you reach the part with many guards inside the sewers.
Get the Longbow (optional)
In the area where you see many guards, there’s a unique treasure at the bottom floor. It’s guarded by some elites.
Kill them and collect the Longbow from the chest.
Continue ahead
After getting the bow, go back to the upper floor and look for a stairs heading upwards.
Follow the stairs and the path until you reach some clues.
Investigate the scene
There are 3 clues in the area. The most important one is behind the locked door.
How to get the key to open the door
To open the door, you need a key. Look for the key in the water down below. It’s right below the small waterfall.
Use the key to open the door. Read the note.
Find and speak to Ealdorman Hundbeorht
You will find out that he went to Bolingbroe.
The location is shown below, marked by the quest symbol.
It’s actually a big fort. There will be many soldiers waiting.
His exact location within the fort is shown in the map below.
To get to the fort, you should find the key. The key is held by one of the guards in a nearby entrance.
Use it to unlock the door that leads to the bridge.
In the next area, you’ll have to lower the drawbridge by destroying the two links. Use the bridge to cross over to the ealdorman’s location.
Inside the fort, you will meet more guards.
There’s also a book of knowledge in the same area. It gives the Focus of the Nornir ability.
Next, find the door that leads to the cellar. It should lead to a path that goes down.
You will then see the ealdorman’s dead body that has been rotting, together with the caretaker.
Search for proof
Look for proof to show Hunwald that his father is dead.
Return the brooch to Hunwald
Go back to Hunwald’s house in Lincoln.
Talk to him to return the brooch and deliver the bad news. The quest ends here.
