The Empty Nest is a main story mission in Starfield.
Your objective is to follow Sam Coe to Akila City to retrieve an artifact.
Here’s a walkthrough and guide of The Empty Nest in Starfield.
To begin the mission, talk to Sam Coe at The Lodge.
Go to Akila City
Next, head on over to Akila City which is on Cheyenne system.
Land on Akila.
After landing, talk to Sam Coe again.
Complete “Job Gone Wrong”
As you enter the city, a guard will tell you about the bank robbery.
You’ll now start the side mission “Job Gone Wrong”. You have to complete this one to proceed with the main story.
Talk to Marshal Blake who is at GalBank.
You’ll need to talk some sense into the robbers. Even if you choose the second option, you’ll be asked to do the first.
Now, go to the communication device to speak with the robber.
You can try to persuade them but you probably need high persuasion level. I tried but it didn’t work for me.
Towards the second part of the conversation, you can try to persuade the robber again.
Return to Blake after the negotiation.
Now you seem to have an option on whether to see the hostages first or to sneak into the bank via the back door.
I chose the latter and went through the back door immediately using the GalBank key.
Inside, you’ll have to kill all of the robbers. There are less than 10 of them.
After saving the hostages, return to Blake outside.
The side mission ends here.
Go to GalBank
Head back into the bank.
Go to the vault area and use the keycard to open two lockers.
Talk to Sam
Once you’re done, talk to Sam about it.
You can persuade him to tell you who Jacob is (which he’ll reveal is his dad).
Talk to Jacob
Now, go to the Coe Estate to talk to Jacob.
Get the maps
After the conversation, you’ll need to either ask Cora for help, or talk to Jacob and have Sam distract him or the last option i.e. to persuade Jacob.
I chose to just persuade Jacob to hand over the maps.
After successfully persuading him, take the Solomon’s Maps from his room.
Get the artifact
Now that you’re done, go to The Empty Nest. Head towards the cave entrance.
You’ll see a lot of the Shaw gang members there. They’ll attack you on sight. Take them down first.
Then, enter the cave.
Inside, you’ll meet more gang members.
Defeat them all.
Then, you’ll reach a locked door. The Shaw Gang Cave Key is in one of the dead bodies.
Use it to open the door.
Head all the way in and you’ll see the artifact.
Use your Cutter to destroy the deposits blocking the artifact first, before you’re able to collect it.
Talk to Shaw
Exit the cave and you’ll bump into Shaw.
Here, you can either attack, pay 4,000 credits or persuade. I chose to persuade and it worked.
(Optional) Help to kill the Ashtas
After the conversation, some Ashtas will appear. You can choose to help them if you want to.
If you chose to help, you can claim some rewards from Shaw after.
Add the artifact
Now, go back to The Lodge to place the artifact.
The mission ends here. You can choose to keep Sam as a companion or change to someone else.
