Sons of the Forest is a game where you play as a trained professional coming to rescue a billionaire and his family. Naturally, you will come across guns including handguns and shotguns.
That said, ammunition is scarce even in this game so you need to conserve bullets.

How to find a handgun
There may be a few areas to get guns in the game but one of them is at the beach area (image below).
It’s at the purple indicator on your GPS, which is also part of your quest objective in single-player.
Go to the beach where the purple icon is.
Swim all the way to the icon following the GPS and you’ll see a life boat.
Climb up the life boat and you’ll see a handgun near a dead soldier.
