Luckily, it’s quite easy to get your companions to level up.

Talk to them
The first method is to have a conversation with the companion. The option is listed in between the quest and the gift conversation.
You can probably only use that once a day or so. Also, you should read the conversation and choose the appropriate option.
Gifting is the fastest way
The best way to level up companions to level 5 quickly is via gifting.
You can gift them stuff continuously. The cheapest items to give that are also easily available are flowers. Just pick some flowers up and gift the flowers to them.
You should also see the favorite things of the day for each companion which is at the bottom right of the screen. They give a lot more experience points. If you can find those items, just give flowers until they reach level 5.
