One Small Step is the first main story mission in the new Bethesda IP, Starfield.
This quest is mostly an introductory quest that teaches you how to play the game and sets up the backstory of the game.
Here’s a walkthrough and guide of One Small Step in Starfield.
When the game begins, you’ll be introduced to Heller and Lin.
Get the Cutter
Follow Supervisor Lin. Then, get the Cutter from the cache.
Collect mineral deposits
Next, you will see some mineral deposits marked on your screen. Use the Cutter to fire at them and collect them.
Follow Supervisor Lin
After you’re done, continue to follow Lin.
Head to the rare mineral deposit alone.
Break up the deposits and collect the strange object
You’ll see a strange object surrounded by mineral deposits.
Break up the deposits first using your Cutter.
Then, pick up the strange object.
Customize your character
After picking up the object, you’ll see all sorts of stuff.
Upon waking up, you need to customize your character. There are quite a number of base models to choose from.
Apart from appearance, you have to choose your background as well. Each background comes with three basic skills.
You can of course learn other skills later on in the game when you earn skill points.
Apart from skills, you can choose some traits as well. This one is optional.
An example of a trait is the Freestar Collective Settler. This means you have dialogues or more advantages when dealing with the same faction, but you’ll be blocked out by other factions.
Choose wisely or don’t choose any at all.
Follow Lin
After customizing your character, follow Lin again.
Equip your helmet
You’ll be asked to equip your helmet. Go to the inventory.
Equip the Deep Mining Space Helmet to block out the sound.
Continue until you reach the outside of the base.
Meet Barrett
You’ll then meet Barrett, one of the Collective members.
Hold off the Pirates
The Crimson Fleet pirates will show up. You can pick up the Eon gun in the briefcase with the bullets.
To equip your pistol, go to inventory. Equip it.
Then, you can quickslot it by pressing the “Favorite” button and assigning the key you want. This allows you to rotate weapons without constantly going to the inventory.
Defeat all of the pirates.
Talk to Barrett once the area is secure.
Use the ship and leave
Barrett will then hand over the ship to you, asking you to bring the strange object to the Constellation.
Go to the pilot seat and leave the planet.
Deal with the Crimson Fleet
Here, you’ll be taught basic controls of your ship, like how to move around and also increase or decrease your ship’s features.
Look at the bottom left corner and you’ll see your Laser, Missile and so on. You can decrease some stats and use the points to increase the other stats at any time. They’re not permanent.
The Crimson Fleet will appear. Defeat them using the three weapons.
You can loot the items from the destroyed ships by going near and looting.
Go to Kreet
You’ll then need to travel to Kreet. Go to the Starmap menu and choose the destination. Hold the travel button.
Once you’ve reached, go to the menu again and click on land.
Deal with the Crimson Fleet captain
Now that you’ve landed, go to the marked area which is the Kreet Research Lab which can be seen on your map.
You should also utilize the scan function which is “F” on PC. It allows you to see all the mineral deposits, items that can be looted and enemies.
The quest markers will also be seen clearly.
Keep heading to Kreet Research Lab and get in.
Inside, you’ll find all sorts of rubbish to loot. You can also take items from dead bodies.
Keep going until you meet some Crimson Fleet members. Defeat them all.
Keep checking the bodies as you may get useful items like Digipick. You’ll need it later.
After looting the Digipick from Hayden’s body, enter his room.
You’ll see his safe which you can open with a Digipick.
The game teaches you how to use a Digipick. You basically need to solve all of the layers starting from the outer layer.
There will be a few keys to choose from and you have to choose one that lines up with the slot perfectly.
Keep doing until all layers are filled (slots).
Inside the safe, you’ll find more stuff.
To leave the area, look for a hatch to go up.
Talk to the captain
You’ll then see some Crimson Fleet members outside.
You can avoid a fight completely by persuading him or you can just battle with them. I chose to lie first.
For the next few ones, I chose to persuade and used the safer options (+1).
Eventually, the fight was avoided.
Return to the ship
You can then fast travel to the ship. Open the scanner and point on the ship.
You’ll see a fast travel option.
Head to Jemison in Alpha Centauri
On your ship, you have to travel to Alpha Centauri next.
Once you’re in the Alpha Centauri System, look for Jemison.
The exact location is New Atlantis. Land there.
After landing, exit the ship.
You’ll meet the ship builder guy nearby where you can buy or modify your ship. This one is not part of the mission.
Meet the Constellation
Go to the New Atlantis Transit.
Use the train to the next area and go to the Lodge to find the Constellation building.
Inside, you’ll be introduced to the Constellation members including Sarah.
Place the artifact
Next, place the artifact on the table.
The mission ends here. You’ll get credits, a lodge key for this Lodge and a Constellation Pack (boostpack).
